I've frequently seen this when the plug is not fully inserted into the jack. It can take a fair amount of pressure to overcome that last detent in the jack.

Aye, it seems a shame to force iOS developers to update their machines (admittedly old machines, but still) to coincide with a new desktop iOS - but I guess that's the case with such a closed development environment.

It'll be a Mac Mini for me I imagine :) Still I also suspect I could run Xcode 4.0.x on a Snow Leopard machine for some time before it became a real issue...Hmmm...just timelining lol

Edit: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/apple-mac-mini-mc238b-a-refurbished-mini-pc-05306984-pdt.html <---reckon that's got reasonable future proofing without shelling out for new?

I liked the hockey puck mouse and still use one on my G4 tower.

I thought the original Pro Mouse with the adjustment on the bottom was very good, the mouse with the scroll ball on top was just awful with how quickly it would gum up.

Now I'm happy with the Magic Mouse, happy after a bought a charger and a few sets of batteries to have on hand...

That sounds scary... fortunately if you password is long enough it would take a lot to get it up to the last digit. Thats pretty strange though. I guess if I had a 1 letter password anything would work?
Hmmmm.... You probably should report this to apple!

My wife and I are going to San Francisco in November. I thinking about taking the BART from SFO to downtown. Mainly I would avoid the hassle of driving downtown plus I would save on rental car costs and parking costs. Once we get downtown we won't really need a car.

How do people feel about BART?
    Is it safe and reliable?

Well all, after many months of tryign to figure out what computer to get I finally got myself a new 17incher. First, thanks to all those who helped me figure out what to do. Secondly I'd like to say that when I was driving the 60 miles hoem from the apple store wiating to open up the computer I was a little nervous that i might have gotten one that is too large for me, and I should have stuck with the 15 incher. Well now I've had the computer home fora few hours, and must say... I absolutely positively made the right choice size wise. This computer is somethign I need for traveling, so its small form make it an easy companion for trips, and I don't need it on a plane so much, so that's fine. Right now I'm playing puzzle pirates writing this and watchign a movie n small mode, and can see most everything. For anyone trying to decide between a 15 ich and a 17 inch, relaly the real estate space on the 17 inch is to die for. I didn't think it'd matter that much to me, but coming from an old 15inch apple flat panle to this, well there's just no comparison. Everything is so nice and open, not cramped at all. Also I'd liek to say that this screen is gorgeous, and whiel I haven't watched a movie on full screen mode, I can't wait to see how it does. I suppose that's all i have for now. Feel free to ask me questions, as I'd love to answer them. I'm so incredibly happy with my computer right now that I don't wanna go to sleep, and would rather tinker around with it all night. Anyway like i said, if you've got questions jsut ask.

I've never really owned a great point and shoot camera for the simple reason that I know I'd never really carry it around with me to use it. I have used a lot of cell phone cameras though, and I will say the ip4 camera is the best that I've used. I have no issues with the photos that I take looking messed up, but that could be because I have no awesome camera to compare it against. I would think that for 90% of the picture taking that most would do, it would be just fine. Even if not, it's worth the tradeoff of not Having to Carry around a Point and shoot camera wherever you go. I will say the camera is a big selling point for me and cell phones though. It's one of the main reasons I haven't went to android yet. The iPhone cameras seem to work ally better. Here are some photos I've snapped with a range of lighting conditions.

    Outside overcast.

With the new software apn settings can't be changed

You mean iPad or iPhone? I don't have to change anything on the iPad, just the iPhone APN. Currently using iPhone 4 with 4.2.1.

Just curious. I got my new pb and am overall very very happy with it. But i am a biologist and work that i do requires up close scrutinay of several photographs. These horizontal lines make that very annoying. If this is a software problem i wont be that discouraged, but if it is hardware i may have to get a pre-october refurb. Anyone have any insight into this issue?

Another possibility is that the problem is in the wetware. Some uses see it others don't. It might be that some hardware has it. It might be that Apple had it in the initial machines but not now. I say that because I just got a PowerBook 15" and the screen is beautiful. No lines. No flicker. No waves. Bright and crisp. I love it.

The Nikon line, with digital ICE (as mentioned above) are a very capable line. I have the earlier Coolscan 4000, with the optional (but critical) scan feeder. It costs more, but when scanning thousands of images it was well worth it.

I believe the new Coolscan 5000 line is both improved and cheaper, so I'd look into that if you have a large quantity of images to scan.

My feeder (I believe they've modified the current feeder) needed a few modifications (searchable via google) to work with thinner cardboard mounts, but once done it worked fairly well. Plastic mounts were never a problem. Of course one had the odd jam, and all images still needed the normal digital darkroom work in Photoshop. But that's standard for every image.

Edit - Just saw your "25,000 images to scan". Be sure to get scanning ASAP - I find that my limit is about 100 per day, allowing time for each image in photoshop.

If I was you, i'd be more selective and only scan the images you were at least considering printing

Well, as I mentioned, I plan to get a machine of my own soon -- either a friend's iBook, or one of the PowerMac G4s (they're quite a good deal now). So looks like I won't have problems with Panther :). However, I asked a Mac reseller today whether I have to fork out the full price for Panther if I buy a new G4 now. They said "probably yes", because they are not aware of any rebates yet :(.

I typed "crappy mac" into Bing and Apple's store was a sponsored result. :apple:

I clicked it so Apple could pay Microsoft for the click.

    That's funnier.

It's a bit of a stretch to conclude that he was comparing the Yankees' brass to the Nazis. He was merely comparing a method of eradicating someone's legacy used by the Nazis, and Stalin, et.al. to what the Yankees have done regarding Torre. The inference has to be drawn. It wasn't made. He did not say "Yankees' executives are like Nazis." Yes, it's necessary for him to say it directly to draw that conclusion.

So I'm guessing its just web-masters not wanting their visters to have to go and download the quicktime plug-in just to use the service, it would just be easyer for the site to use WMP and be done w/ 95% the computer population.

oh how i hope you are wrong!!! what an impoverished world, when microsoft is the only choice! that is when i'll demure.

fortunately, despite it's low reputation in the mac world, realplayer is still an option, and as i use it extensively to listen to german streams, i guess it's no big deal to use it for my previous qt selections.
